CUMBRIA Mariners American Football team hope to play their first friendly game next month in Whitehaven after being accepted in to the national league.

Paddy Gorrill: It’s a big step forward for the Mariners
The Mariners have been granted associate member status of the British American Football League (BAFL), which means they will be assessed this year in friendly matches at their Copeland Stadium home.

And if up to the mark they will play in the national Division Two next season alongside the likes of Manchester Titans, Glasgow Tigers and Edinburgh Wolves.

Club President Paddy Gorrill, said: “While this doesn’t guarantee full league membership next year, it is a big step towards bringing BAFL football to the people of Cumbria.

“The BAFL is a national league with teams from England, Scotland and Wales competing, and we hope that people will come to the Copeland Stadium to watch the games and support the new team.”

The Mariners have a squad of around 30 players from Cumbria and the Border region, and are still looking for new blood.

Player-coach Julian Graham, said: “Its great to see how far we have come in less than one year. We have a great group of committed players and we are always looking to add to the team.

“We are looking for players of all shapes and sizes. If you want to come and try it out, just join us at training. It’s a sport for anyone who wants to try something new and being a summer sport its great for anyone missing rugby and football.”

The Mariners train on Thursdays 7pm to 9pm at Maryport and anyone interested in playing, coaching or helping out should contact the club on cumbriamariners@googlemail.com or visit the website www.cumbriamariners.co.uk. No experience is necessary. Players must be over 18, though there are plans to launch a youth team in the future.
